Volkswagen Tiguan has sporty SUV looks and is offered in two or four-wheel drive.

For the 2012 model season the Volkswagen Tiguan received a new frontal appearance to bring it into line with the latest Volkswagen horizontal theme. A theme that’s now used on VWs from the Polo through to theAmarok utility. Interestingly, though, the new VW up! hasn’t received this frontal style as Volkswagen is keen for its new baby car to establish its own individual identity.

VALUE

The standard Volkswagen Tiguan 118TSI starts at $28,490 and provides a range of standard equipment such as cruise control, roof rails, rear fog lamps, alloy wheels (17-inch on the 155TSI, 16-inch on the other models with optional 18-inch), auxiliary and USB audio inputs, Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming, media devise interface (MDI) and leather covered steering wheel and gear lever.

The flagship 155TSI will set you back $42,990 and adds chrome side mouldings, window trim and roof rails, front fog lamps, sports front seats with storage drawers, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, low tyre pressure indicator and driver fatigue detection system.

For those are looking to take their VW Tiguan off-road the AWD models come with a useful approach angle of 28 degrees. In line with its more suburban role the front-wheel drive 118TSI is limited to just 18 degrees.

TECHNOLOGY

In 2011, the Tiguan range expanded its appeal by adding a two-wheel drive (2WD) alternative to the all-wheel drive (4WD) models. The entry level Tiguan 118TSI we reviewed combines a 1.4-litre Twincharger petrol engine with Volkswagen’s BlueMotion technology to combine performance and fuel economy.

The Twincharger is a clever combination of supercharging and turbocharging. The supercharger provides a rapid increase in power when you step on the accelerator. The turbocharger then adds extra grunt as it comes into play at higher revs, the two blowers work in combination as the engine electronics calculate the driver’s needs from moment to moment.

We were able to drive both the Tiguan 118TSI and the 155TSI as part of our routine road test program. The 118TSI with a six-speed manual gearbox, the 155TSI with Volkswagen’s self-shifting-manual DSG transmission. While driving enthusiasts will clearly prefer the semi sporty performance from the 155TSI we feel that most buyers will be more than satisfied with the economy model.

DESIGN

As well as changes to the frontal appearance, the latest Tiguan has revised taillights, these also have a horizontal look and tie in neatly with the revised front end. Interiors feature new seat trim and a redesigned steering wheel. There’s plenty of leg and headroom in both front and rear seats, with space in the back for three adults without too much of a squeeze.

Rear storage space is a reasonable 395 litres, expanding to 1510 litres with the rear seatbacks folded. Both the rear and front passenger seats in the 155TSI fold flat and we were able to transport a couple of 2.4-metre posts without any problem. The front seatback can act as a table when folded.

SAFETY

Standard crash avoidance features in all Tiguan models include ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, auto-hold parking brake, electronic stability and traction control. Six airbags will help minimise injuries should everything still go wrong.

DRIVING

Handling is surprisingly good for a tallish vehicle with good ground clearance and the Tiguan can be pushed through corners at reasonable speeds without too much body roll. Having said that, it’s no sportscar so shouldn't be rushed too hard at bends. Noise and vibration reduction is very good on smooth to moderate roads, although not so good on the typical Australian coarse-chip surfaces where there can be quite a racket at times. Try for yourself if trips to the country are in your sights.

VERDICT

Our tests of models at each end of the Volkswagen Tiguan range show the German maker has a range that will appeal to a variety of budgets and buyers.

If I'm to believe the editorial in this story. I'm a sad Volkswagen dealer.

Why? read carefully and you'll see that the 2500 Volkswagen Polo WRC editions will only be built in LH drive and we don't or can't have LH drive vehicles. So that's why I'm sad. This very limited edition Polo would have been THE hot hatch at least in Australia if not the world. Pretenders - move aside.

Volkswagen out in front

Volkswagen has continued its recent dominance of Australia's most prestigious awards, Australia's Best Cars, with nine models making it through to the finals.

But the big news from the 2012 awards was the strong performance by Hyundai with five vehicles, the same number as prestige car maker BMW, making it through the list of 45 finalists.

Hyundai is the world's fastest growing brand and is now also starting to be recognised as a world leader in design, quality and technology.

Volkswagen Polo BlueGT 2.7.2012

With active-cylinder management.

The frugal Volkswagen Polo BlueGT has arrived in the United Kingdom and it’s available for order at a starting price of 17,400 pounds. Under the hood it has a 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter engine that produces 138 hp (103 kW) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque, enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).

By implementing the engine stop/start system and active-cylinder management, Volkswagen was able to improve the Polo’s fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to 61.4 mpg UK (51.1 mpg US or 4.6 liters / 100 km) and emissions of 107 g/km, regardless if the engine is connected to the 6-speed manual gearbox or the 7-speed DSG.

When the car is under light and medium loads, the active-cylinder management system can automatically shut down the second and third cylinders, resulting in fuel savings of up to 0.4 liters / 100 km. When the car is driven at a constant speed of 30 mph (50 km/h), the savings can be as high as 1 liter / 100 km, while at a constant speed of 44 mph (70 km/h) the savings are of about 0.7 liters / 100 km.

The Volkswagen Polo BlueGT is fitted with 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and a 15mm lower suspension. The rear bumper with diffuser, rear spoiler and the front bumper with LED DRLs are borrowed from the Polo GTI, along with the front windscreen rain channels and the side sills from the Polo BlueMotion.

Passat helps to propel VW to a 62 per cent sales lift in United States

VOLKSWAGEN’S ambitions for world number one status received a boost in the United States last month when surging Passat sales triggered a 62 per cent rise in August VW retail volumes – the 24th consecutive month of growth for the German brand in the world’s second largest market.

Big Japanese manufacturers Toyota and Honda also continued their US sales recovery from last year’s stock shortages caused by Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, reporting sales increases of 42 per cent and 60 per cent respectively last month.

The overall US market jumped a healthy 20 per cent, with even the Detroit big three motor companies all recording double-digit sales increases.....read more

"Amarok service centres in remote locations to help VW tap lucrative mining market"

I've had a bit of experience with mining companies over the years. I first tapped into the sector via a fleet management company which necessitated frequent trips to the Capricorn Coal mine at Middlemount. I was amazed then and still am at the torture vehicles are put to in the mining communities, let alone down in the pits.

Toyota has had it so good for so long, but it's not surprising to see the competitors coming out of the woodwork in the last couple of years. There's Mazda, Ford, Isuzu D Max, VW with Amarok and even Mahindra, the Indian based manufacturer now making a space in Australia. The great advantage that Toyota had was that it's vehicles could be serviced by local mechanical shops close to the mines. The thought of having to drive an hour or 2 for a routine service was not on the radar. And that's where Volkswagen has a challenge.

Volkswagen vehicles are amongst the most technically innovative vehicles in the world and need to be connect to the VW diagnostic system to check on up to date programming, recalls, in service updates and the like. With my relationship with Complete Taxi Management, VW have been reluctant to share access to their systems, making an initial investment in the diagnostic computers and access to the VW mainframe very expensive. CTM have invested the necessary, but diagnosis on nearly 100 vehicles requires trained technicians, whilst mechanics working on mine vehicles are a different story.

Mine vehicles need to be working - and they work hard. When they're down for maintenance, they have to be turned around quickly and that's the biggest test for Amarok in the mine space. Who knows. If logic prevails then that might just open the door for other specialists to gain access to the same technology.

VOLKSWAGEN is targeting lucrative mining fleet contracts with its rugged Amarok one-tonne ute range by setting up special service centres in remote areas of Western Australia and Queensland that cannot support a full dealership.

Mining giant BHP Billiton recently announced it has joined the growing number of fleets that will only buy vehicles with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, and VW wants to capitalise on this opportunity for the Amarok by reducing potential objections about servicing costs and convenience.

Speaking at this week’s launch of single-cab and automatic Amarok variants, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia national aftersales manager Phil West said a number of service centres will be operating in remote areas of WA such as Newman, Karratha and Broome by the end of this year.

VW is also holding a dealer event at Kununurra in northern WA this week to showcase the Amarok’s suitability to harsh environments.

Mr West said that for the past two years VW has been working with rural dealers to make sure they are “ready and positioned well to meet the market”.

“What we need to do is make sure that we have the capability in the network to support us… but clearly some of this market is clearly within an area that wouldn’t normally support a dealership,” he said.....read more

An interesting commentary from Karla Pincott - the other genders opinion of a typically male dominated vehicle. Whilst most journalists will take about entry and departure angles, towing capacity, Karla looks more at the design, comfort and the like, and good on her.

As I see it, ute's have generally found their basis on the parents heavier truck range and have been downsized to suit. Isuzu D Max is typical of the combatants - Spirit of Truck - with all but VW having that heritage. Along comes Amarok, based on at the worst a 4WD and at best on a passenger vehicle chassis. The product of that is a smooth ride, great interior noise reduction and a sweet gearbox, now available as the world's first 8 speed automatic on this type of vehicle.

It always seems that we're behind the game when it comes to the launch of new models. The USA already has the new Beetle hardtop and even before we get the same car, they're up for the convertible. The luck of having LH Drive I suppose.

Australia is one of the few countries to have RH drive. South Africa, New Zealand, share the LHS of the road, whilst those in the UK and even Japan can choose from either. Which leads to the question as to why? So why do we drive on the LHS? Without research it's an interesting question so feel free to enlighten me. 

With the ever increasing number of LH imports arriving from the USA, perhaps it's time to consider LH drive as an option. I've been in the motor industry for a long time - over 35 years - and during this time Toyota Hilux has held the mantle of the top model in the 4WD ute market. There's been contenders and some pretenders over that time, but Hilux still holds the "I am King" title.

In recent years, the tsunami in Japan, floods in Thailand and the relentless pursuit of Toyota by the other manufacturers has put Toyota Hilux under the spotlight. Seems that they won't get away any longer with higher prices and lower safety relying on the badge to retain market share.

The eight-speed auto quickly endeared itself on the long transport stage

Stuart Martin road tests and reviews the new Volkswagen Amarok auto at its Australian launch with specs, fuel economy and verdict.

Good things come to those who wait - apparently - so the Volkswagen brand is hoping the eight-speed auto Amarok will be a very good thing indeed.

The German brand's answer to the dominant Toyota Hilux has been longing for an automatic and it now has one, at least in the top-spec all-wheel drive models. There's also a single-cab version to get the German brand's steel-capped boot in the door of the workhorse market.

VW Australia managing director Anke Koeckler says she is happy with Amarok sales but a single cab and an automatic will have an impact in getting more on the streets.

"We are going to have access to customers which we didn't have in the past, so our dealers are experiencing new customers, rural Queensland are getting more new customers in particular, then they experience our whole model range," she says.

"With the auto the mix is quite significant, in business, private and tradies, the auto gives us more sales opportunities," Ms Koeckler says. Having been in the motor industry for over 35 years, it's truly amazing at how far commercial vans have come since I started.

When you buy a luxury car, do you buy the price of the badge or do you buy what the car can do?

There's a lot of people out there who'll spend $5000 or even $10,000 to buy a BMW, Mercedes, a Lexus or even an exotic just cause it's got a badge that other people will notice. it sort of says 'Look at me' - and I'm just as guilty as the next person. I've got 2 motorbikes in my garage - A Ducati Diavel and a Victory Hammer which just scream the same thing out.

Fresh details of the 2013 Golf GTI have surfaced including the suggestion that it could be the first Volkswagen to have an alloy floor and roof. The new Mark 7 Golf is due in Australia next year, probably about March.

Spied recently near the Nurburgring for testing under heavy camouflage, it's rumoured that the car will run on the MQB platform, develop 194kw (6kw more powerful than the current Golf R) and get to 100km in less than 7 seconds, according to Autocar.

And yes there'll be the Golf Officiandos waiting patiently for this new generation Golf GTI, but in the meantime, there is no reason for us ordinary people to wait. The current Golf range is on drive away specials at the moment - that means a saving of over $4000 as we pay the on roads and dealer delivery until June 30th.

New details are starting to emerge about the 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI.

According to Autocar, the model will ride on the MQB platform and feature an aluminium floor and roof. The car is also expected to have a VAQ front differential which uses an electronically-controlled Haldex clutch for improved handling.

Power will reportedly be provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine that develops 260 hp (194 kW / 264 PS) - 52 hp (39 kW / 53 PS) more than today's model. This should enable the hatchback to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than seven seconds.

Volkswagen is gearing up to launch the all-new seventh generation Golf at the Paris Motor Show later this year. The high volume model is considered to be amongst the most important models under the VW Group umbrella, but the quicker GTI version will have to wait until next year for its launch.

Our spies caught a prototype of the VW Golf VII GTI when it was testing near the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, no doubt heading for a high speed testing run. Engineers have spared no expense in the camouflage department by keeping the majority of the styling elements covered, however we did catch a glimpse of the honeycomb grille.

Under the skin lies the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform which also underpins the new Audi A3 series. It is lighter and more flexible than its predecessor and contributes to a 100kg (220lb) weight loss over the sixth generation model.

Power will come courtesy of a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit that will produce around 240 PS (177kW/237hp) that will enable the model to beat the 0-100km/h (0-62mph) of 6.9 seconds that its predecessor made.

Matt Darby outline's the role of the finance department in a modern car dealership.

The finance and Insurance department in a car dealership is more than just a profit centre, it's where customers who want to purchase a particular vehicle will determine the affordability of that vehicle.

From talking to our customers, we find that their bank and credit union aren't all that interested in funding the vehicle - lack of interest, higher rates and charges and then the approval and documentation process can take weeks. A dealer finance manager can generally have an approval on the spot for most customers or overnight at the worst.

Why does this happen? Finance in dealerships is an important aspect of the business and rather than a side line, it comes down to right person, right place, right time. I've had personal experience with the delays that banks make and prefer to deal directly with my own finance guys.

The nature of vehicle dealerships is that often each department has its own budget that they must work to.  This often means that each department in the dealership is working in isolation from the others.  

As a generalisation, the competitiveness of the used vehicle market often means the used vehicle department is the most willing to invest in new technology and services to market their vehicles online.

Everyone knows the value of finance and insurance to a dealership - for many it is the most profitable aspect of their business.  This being the case is there not an opportunity for the used vehicle and F&I departments to work together to benefit both?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes!  Used vehicles and F&I are closely linked in "real life" so why is this not seen more often in the digital space?  This may be due to lack of communication, political or budgetary reasons or simply not knowing how F&I can be involved in online marketing.  

Whatever the reasons, there are a number of tactics that can be used to more closely integrate F&I with online marketing of used vehicles.

Finance application forms

The most obvious place to start is by ensuring that the dealership website includes a finance application form.  This is, obviously, included on the finance page of your website but should also be integrated with your used vehicle pages.  

After all, where is the logic in a browser finding a vehicle they like, then having to leave the page to find out whether they can afford it.  Dealerships can use a stripped back finance enquiry form or a fully fledged finance application form depending on how well you know your customers.

Displaying finance rates

Finance rates often make a vehicle seem more appealing than the listed price.  The logic behind this is that seeing a weekly or monthly finance rate helps put prices into perspectives that customers can understand.  $69,990 may seem unreachable to most, but when broken down into a monthly repayment, potential customers are able to rationalise their decision.  

Displaying these rate on the stock page can be a straightforward process that is simply a case of including a fixed finance rate in your used vehicle listings - i.e. Finance from $XXX per month.

Finance calculators

Finance calculators take the next step from finance application forms and displaying finance rates.  A finance calculator allows customers to work out exactly what they can afford to pay by adjusting a number of variables such as deposit and length of term but keeping the finance rate constant.  

This helps make the process more personal for a browser and searching by finance can be a more relevant way for some browsers to search.

Finance & Insurance in email marketing  

The three tools listed above focus on the area of used vehicle presentation on a dealer’s website.  F&I can also play a part in email marketing communications.  Many dealers are effective at promoting special finance rates but few drill down to market these on individual used vehicles.  

Imagine how much more effective this could be if the email recipient receives an email with a selection of used cars all listed with a monthly finance rate that he or she can relate to.  A car they like quickly becomes a car they can afford when it is presented in this manner.

Finance can also be important in retaining customers that have previously purchased a vehicle from you.

Emailing new models with finance rates to customers that are nearing the end of their lease term, or are three years into their finance repayments, is a great way for them to see how easy it would be to upgrade for very little added expense.

All of the above tools are available to dealerships.  If it doesn't exist as an off-the-shelf product then think about getting it purpose-built for your dealership - this is certainly worth the investment if it results in more finance enquiry.  

To be truly effective, online dealership departments MUST work together - not just the F&I and used vehicle departments but also the new vehicle, parts, service and admin departments.

 is considering adding another crossover to its product portfolio as it takes aim at ambitious sales targets in the United States and overseas markets.

“It's a part of our vision for the future,” Volkswagen  Group of America CEO Jonathan Browning said.

The vehicle would have SUV-style cues, and Browning said it's being discussed by company brass.

Speaking before a luncheon crowd in Detroit on Tuesday, the VW exec said there's “a great opportunity for a midsize SUV.”

He declined to offer specifics or timing. Volkswagen already sells the Tiguan and Touareg crossovers in the United States. Another ute would allow VW to reach a broader spectrum of customers in the competitive U.S. market.

There's a strong possibility that the future ute would be based on the Volkswagen Group's so-called MQB platform, which launches on the Audi A3 and the VW Golf and will be used for more than 40 of the company's models by 2017. The platform is said to reduce costs and speed development time.

Whilst we have the Golf Cabriolet here in Australia, we're yet to see the GTI version. The jury is certainly out on whether we'll get it a Northstar - sales have been ok but not as consistent as they should be.

And there's no reason really. A great car to drive, rag roof works really well and there's no better feeling than going topless. We have perfect weather for it, yet our southern cousins in Victoria keep selling more. Go figure!

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is making a return in topless form for the first time since the first generation, a fact that is sure to create quite a buzz for enthusiasts. To feed that lust a little further, Volkswagen has presented the first videos as well as a bunch of new photos for you to feast your eyes upon.

The GTI Cabriolet will be the final variant of the sixth generation Golf before the new model arrives next year. It boasts a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 210 PS (155 kW / 208 hp) and 206 lbs ft (280 Nm) of torque that is mated to a six-speed manual or optional six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox.

It accelerates slightly slower than its hot hatch sibling with a 0-100kph(0-62mph) time of 7.3 seconds and is capable of reaching a speed of 237kph (147mph) if equipped with the manual transmission (2kph slower with DSG). Fuel consumption is rated at 7.6L/km (31 mpg US / 37 mpg UK) while CO2 emissions are 180g/km.

The GTI Cabriolet features an electricaly powered fabric roof that can be open or closed in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 30kph (18mph).

The first available models will arrive in dealerships on June 22nd, pricing is yet to be announced.

Volkswagen is having a major push into US markets to follow the presence of the Japanese, Koreans and of course their fellow European companies.

Expect to see all of the German companies guns brought to bear on that country as they try to take market share away from competitors. R Line is the equivalent of FPV or HSV in Australian makes. It doesn't quite to the AMG or M style sports packages that MB and BMW offer, but let me tell you that R Line is just, well nicer than the standard car. Generally  a bit more sportier look on the outside, more luxury on the inside with all the passive and active safety items you'd expect from VW. Australia? Probably not, but we can always dream.

2013 Volkswagen CC R-Line

The US-Spec Volkswagen CC is set to receive the R-Line treatment before the end of the year and here are the first photos to prove it. The model received its mid-cycle facelift for the 2013 model year and went on sale in March, the R-Line version will arrive in dealerships before the end of the year.

Exterior design updates distinguish it from the standard model and include a redesigned and sportier front bumper that boasts a larger air intake as well as projector-style fog lights. A set of unique 18-inch alloy wheels, shaded taillights and R-Line badging completes the look. Inside the cabin, there are stainless-steel R-Line scuff plates and a multifunction steering wheel.

The package is only available with 2.0-liter, turbocharged TSI engine that generates 200 PS (147 kW / 197 hp) with either six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Wow - what a great looking car, but it does help to have a good photographer and setting. In Europe Scirocco comes in 2 specifications - 'base' model and R. Of course we only receive the R specification in Australia, but this is my first look at Scirocco in white.

I've even asked my Stock Controller to procure one for me - in white so we can customize it for our showroom display. Scirocco R gets the 188kw engine and the 6 speed DSG transmission make the car a pleasure to drive.

The only question I have for Apple, is that being so geek minded, what do they really know about car control systems. Having read numerous stories about the legendary Mr Jobs and his penchant for NOT using a car that often, I worry that it will be too techy and not receive the popularity of say an I Phone, Pod, or Pad.

Even car people get instrumentation, audio controls and such like incorrect in a big way - but I'm crossing my fingers and toes and hope that the technology does get into car design. You’ll never have to touch that in-dash dial again, with Apple putting controls on your wheel.

Among 21 patents for Apple published yesterday by the US Patent and Trademark Office is a remote control that clips to your steering wheel.

It looks remarkably like the thumb-operated click wheel now made familiar by the former long reign of the Apple iPod – before the crown was taken by the iPhone (now looking nervously over its little shoulder at the iPad). The resemblance is probably the mark of a particular engineer who previously headed up design at legendary Frog Design in California, who have worked with Apple since the early days, according to a report on Patently Apple.

However the patent details the remote’s faceplate as being completely touch-sensitive rather than rotationally, as the click-wheel was. Patently Apple believes the remote control patent will mainly be used to develop interfaces for portable media devices, which means applications could also be developed to control future iPads – and whatever else Apple has coming down their clever line. Say bye-bye to factory-fitted audio, satnavs and possibly even telematics.

The only problem we can see with this part of Apple's grand plan is that the remote is bound to get in most people's way as they steer. From that, we believe the position on the outer part of the wheel will change before it gets to market. Stay tuned. But don't touch that dial.

Daniel  Zaustin of Carsguide dares to mention that many of us can't or won't change tyres on our cars.

Any why would we? Most new cars have a 3-5 year roadside assistance package built into the new car and frankly if you get something for free, why not utilize the service?

Using the excuse, I don't know how to change a tyre would seem to indicate that as a reasonable out, but frankly from a personal viewpoint, if I'm travelling somewhere on an appointment, I don't see how or why I'm going to get my clothes dirty or rumpled trying to do so. I have changed a tyre or three in my motoring life, but I'd really prefer someone else to do that for me.

And the ladies? No chance thanks. it's a phone call to the motoring service or their significant other first. Nor would I expect my wife to do the doing part - a jack is cumbersome, a spare is heavy and the wheels are generally dirty. Phone a friend I say.

All Volkswagens come standard with a 3 year unlimited kilometre warranty and 3 years roadside assistance. Of course after the warranty expires, there are options to extend that for another 2 years and include the roadside assistance. After that, I'd suggest the RACQ as my preferred roadside team

People don’t want to get their clothes dirty.

Hang your head in shame, Australia. It seems we’re as bad as the Brits on changing a flat.

UK research shows 36 per cent of Brits don’t know how to change a tyre -- and four per cent don’t know if they even have a spare. And the NRMA says Australians are reluctant to grab hold of a spare as well.

The NRMA’s Tim Pomroy says that while a flat tyre is one of the most common call-outs for their roadside assistance, it’s not always because callers can’t change the flat.

“Many people in Australia call for roadside assistance not because they can’t necessarily change a tyre but because they don’t want to,” Pomroy says. “A lot of people are on their way to work when it happens and don’t want to get their clothes dirty.”

In the UK, the research into flat tyres by British repair company Kwik Fit, suggested that the poor result was a symptom of the confusion caused by differing practices among car manufacturers.

Drivers reported varying methods offered by manufacturers to deal with a flat tyre, from smaller space saver tyres to providing a puncture repair kit instead of a spare tyre, Kwik Fit’s UK communications director Roger Griggs says.

“The recent trend among car manufacturers to offer space-saver spares or puncture repair kits instead of full-size spare tyres could be the cause of this confusion among motorists,” said Griggs.

“It’s is worrying how many drivers don’t know what provision they have for a puncture, but it’s even more of a concern to see how many have absolutely nothing in their car to deal with a deflated tyre.

“There are clearly gaps in knowledge around how to change a tyre, and indeed many cars are missing tools, which means even if a spare is carried some motorists will struggle to swap it over.”

Created by nine apprentices, the one-off model features a Deep Black metallic exterior with matte anthracite accents. There's also a sport-tuned suspension (which reduces the ride height by 35mm), high-performance brakes and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin has leather / Alcantara sport seats, an Alcantara headliner and an 1,800 watt audio system.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter TSI petrol engine that has been tuned to produce 360 PS (265 kW / 296 hp). It is connected to a six-speed DSG transmission.

VW Polo R WRC street concept 17.05.2012

At the 31st GTI Meeting at Wörthersee, Austria, Volkswagen debuted the Polo WRC Street concept car and Polo R WRC road-going prototype.

The Polo WRC Street concept previews a small series production vehicle which is due to be launched in late 2013. It features a rear spoiler, diffuser, sports suspension and WRC logos. Power is provided by a 2.0-liter TSI producing 220 HP (162 kW / 217 bhp). More details will be released at a later date.

Also revealed at the weeklong festival for Volkswagen enthusiasts is the newly developed Polo R WRC which Volkswagen Motorsport is presenting as a road-going prototype for the FIA World Rally Championship. Dubbed by Volkswagen Head of Development Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg as the "hottest Polo ever," it features a racing version of the 1.6-liter TSI engine with approximately 300 HP (220 kW / 296 bhp). The tarmac prepared racer will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds.

Volkswagen has announced plans to offer a CrossPolo Urban White special edition.

Featuring a white pearlescent exterior, the model is distinguished by gloss black mirrors, tinted windows and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, there's cloth/Alcantara sport seats, a black headliner and silver contrast stitching. Other highlights include a silver-painted centre stack, chrome trim and an air conditioning system.

Under the hood, four petrol and three diesel engines will be available. They can be mated to five- or six-speed manuals as well as an optional seven-speed DSG transmission.

The CrossPolo Urban White will go on sale later this year and German pricing starts at €18,975.

The Courier Mail's Mark Hinchliffe outlines the way manufacturers are planning to reduce fuel consumption. 

Given that the price of fuel will continue to rise worldwide and that technology for utilizing other natural resources (gas, solar, wind and the like) are still very futuristic, then car manufacturers must continue on driving down fuel consumption figures as Volkswagen as pioneered with their Bluemotion technology.

Next steps says Hinchliffe are slippery engines - those coated with a surface that makes the friction causing higher consumption to reduce. Whilst VW is to be commended for vehicle such as the Golf Bluemotion, I feel that is only the start. The article below predicts that consumption will reduce by 19% in the next five years - I personally feel that Volkswagen engineers will beat that target and then some.

Researchers have found that friction accounts for a third of all energy loss in a car.

Slicker solutions for fuel economy are on the way.

Cars will improve their fuel economy by 18 per cent in the next five to 10 years, according to a joint Finnish/American study.

Savings will be made by using slick new surfaces on the inside of your engine, lubricant additives, low-viscosity lubricants and low-friction tyres inflated to pressures higher than normal. 

A joint study by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in USA has found these technologies can reduce friction by anything from 10 to 80 per cent in various components of a car.

The study predicts that reducing friction will lead to fuel savings and reduced emissions up to 18 per cent within the next five to 10 years and up to 61 per cent within 15 to 25 years. 

Researchers have found that friction accounts for a third of all energy loss in a car. Together with other losses through cooling, air resistance and exhaust emssions, only 21.5 per cent of the energy output of the fuel is used to move the car.

Their study found that friction can be reduced by 10 to 50 per cent by using new surfaces inside engines such as diamond-like carbon materials and tiny materials called nanocomposites.

A further 25 to 50 per cent of friction can be reduced by laser texturing to etch a microtopography on the surface of engine internals to channel lubricant and reduce internal pressures, reducing fuel consumption by 4 per cent. 

Ionic liquids made of electrically charged molecules that repel one another will prodice a further 25 to 50 per cent reduction in friction.

Can you image driving to and from Sydney and then a bit further on one tank of fuel? This story out of the USA  says that you can. Real world driving conditions and a Volkswagen Passat diesel sedan have allowed these VW owners to do just that.

Reinforces what my mate Greg Collins of Complete Taxi Management has been saying all along. Why would you choose an LPG or Hybrid when you can achieve consumption figures like this from a Volkswagen. CTM runs a fleet of almost 50 VW Passat 125TDI Wagons and feedback from Greg suggests that more taxi companies should consider the change

Volkswagen Passat TDI long-distance record 08.5.2012

Travelled 1626.1 miles (2,616.9 km)

John and Helen Taylor have managed to set a new record for travelling the farthest distance on a single tank of fuel.

Piloting a standard Volkswagen Passat TDI, the couple managed to travel 1626.1 miles (2,616.9 km) on the single tank of diesel. The distance beats the previous record of 1526.6 miles (2,456.8 km) which was set by a Euro-spec Volkswagen Passat 1.6 BlueMotion.

Over the course of three days, the Taylors travelled in "real world driving conditions" and carried 120 pounds (54.4 kg) of luggage. Despite the challenges, John and Helen were able to average an impressive 84.1 mpg US (2.8 L/100km / 101 mpg UK).

According to John Taylor, "We're excited to have broken the record for the longest distance driven on one-tank of fuel. The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip. It offers plenty of interior and cargo space, yet is frugal enough to help us achieve this record."

Obviously based on the Golf, the Golf Cabriolet also shows styling cues from the Audi A3 Convertible.

Isaac Bobber comments about the 2012 Golf Cabriolet and leaves me a bit puzzled. If you scroll to the bottom of the article, he lists a BMW 1 series hardtop in his comparable cars along with the Renault Megane Cabrio and a Peugeot convertible. Rather than letting us wonder Isaac, why don't you explain why you haven't included cars such as BMW Cabrio. Mini's new vehicle, along with even Audi and Mercedes.

However his closing comments are probably the most suited  -  "So sorted is the chassis, the braking, and the cars overall balance, and its plenty comfortable inside too that it not only leaves is VW sibling, but also its rivals well behind it." - and methinks he wants one for a long term evaluation.

Isaac Bober road tests and reviews the 2012 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet 118TSI.

With all of our sun you'd think drop-tops would be (more-ital) popular here in Australia.

The reason they're not is usually because driving a convertible is about as much fun as carrying a water-logged tissue box - almost no structural rigidity, see.

But that's not the case with the soft-top Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet; with the top up or down it feels as solid as the proverbial rock. Ordinarily, driving a soft-top can be like riding along with your head inside a bass drum, but the Golf Cabriolet is easily one of the quietest canvas-roofed cars on the planet.

And with its 1.4-litre turbocharged and supercharged engine, its nimble handling and decent ride your left scratching your head about why you'd look further up the tree at the also-topless VW Eos.

VALUE

With prices starting at $36,990 for the six-speed manual, and $39,490 for the seven-speed DSG, the Golf Cabriolet undercuts the likes of the VW Eos (from $49,990), C70 Convertible (from $61,950) , Peugeot 308CC (from $50,990), and even the MINI Cabrio (from $40,350).

And you get a fair amount of kit for your money, including dual-zone climate control, hill start assist, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity with audio streaming, electric door mirrors, and wireless remote control of the central locking, matte chrome dash and door inserts, 17-inch alloys with 225-series rubber, rain-sensing wipers. More than that, the glove box can be cooled and the rear seat back has a 50:50 split.

TECHNOLOGY

Under the bonnet is Volkswagens familiar 1.4-litre twin-charger unit which combines turbo charging and supercharging for maximum efficiency and oomph. There's 118kW at 5800rpm and a hefty 240Nm from 1500-4000rpm, mated to the six-speed manual fuel consumption is 6.6L/100km and drops to 6.5L/100km for the not-so-smooth seven-speed DSG.

But it's the soft roof that's the clever-clogs part of the car. See, usually it's impossible to make a canvas roofed car nice and quiet, but the VW engineers have managed to insulate the inner and outer layer and have virtually eliminated wind noise. And, thanks to four roof bows, the canvas roof manages to keep its shape at all times. It takes the electro-hydraulic roof just 9.0 seconds to open and 11.0 seconds to stow, and it can be operated at up to 30km/h.

Even more impressive is the fact there's no rollover bar, rather, there's an automatically deployable rollover modules which are triggered when the airbags are deployed. These units are incredibly compact allowing for folding back seat rests rather than just a ski pass-through port.

DESIGN

Obviously based on the Golf, the Golf Cabriolet also shows styling cues from the Audi A3 Convertible (just look at it from the rear three-quarters). But, rather than just be a drop-top Golf, the Cabriolet has its own distinctive and, dare I say it, muscular and sporting look - it's certainly more sports car than cabriolet. And with the roof up or down there's a reasonable 250 litres of boot space.

On the inside, the styling is typical VW and that means its ultra practical and easy to use on the fly. But more than that, it's also incredibly well screwed together and the material choice is first rate; in this price range no-one makes a better interior.

There's plenty of room in the front seats which are comfortable and supportive, and thanks to the rear-seat entry aid getting into and out of the spacious back seats (which seat two) is an cinch for even a six-footer like me.

SAFETY

Due to the fact a soft-top carries no reinforcing roof structure, the engineers are required to make the body as strong as possible. And they've done a great job with the Golf Cabriolet which is free of scuttle shake and feels just about as rigid as a hard-headed Golf.

In addition to the stronger body, the Golf Cabriolet has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, runs five airbags, front and rear head restraints, anti-slip regulation, electronic diff lock, stability control, ABS and electronic brake force distribution, and much more.

DRIVING

This is a tale of love and hate... around town I found the Golf Cabriolet to be an awkward beast that was forever wheel spinning from a standing start and then lurching through its first two or three gears. Up to about 30-40km/h the seven-speed DSG seems clumsy indeed compared with the six-speed unit we tested in the petrol-powered Yeti the other week.

But, once you're up and running the transmission smooths right out offering rifle-bolt precise shifts and a seamless delivery of oomph. The diesel-like 250Nm from 1500-4000rpm makes flattening hills and overtaking an cinch.

And the nimble chassis, compliant ride and well-weighted steering means the Golf Cabriolet is anything but a soggy soft-top. Indeed, turn the Golf Cabriolet into a corner and such is its composure and balance, thanks to its lowered sports suspension (similar to the Golf GTI), that it ends up feeling more hot hatch that high street poseur.

This is a drop-top for keen drivers and not just hairdressers... indeed, thanks to the roomy back seats and the ease with which you can access them this could - maybe, possibly - even work as a family car

VERDICT

In the Golf Cabriolet and the Eos, Volkswagen has two very similar drop-tops, and going into this drive we thought the Cab would pale next to the Eos, rather were left wondering why you'd pay the nearly $10,000 more for the Eos. So sorted is the chassis, the braking, and the cars overall balance, and its plenty comfortable inside too that it not only leaves is VW sibling, but also its rivals well behind it.

Such is the confidence of the German Automotive Giant, that they believe that their products will last and last. This is certainly the case with the Touareg. Whilst sales are up compared against the old model, reality is that we'd be selling more if we could get them. Touareg has been a worldwide success and volumes coming down under are small.

John Parry road tests and reviews the Volkswagen Touareg.

Efforts by Volkswagen to entice buyers to the latest generation of the Touareg appear to be paying off. Monthly sales are up more than four-fold since the 2012 models went on sale in August. For good reason.

The latest version is roomier, lighter, better proportioned and easier on fuel than its predecessors, the first of which arrived here eight years ago.

DESIGN

There are four models -- three diesels and one petrol -- and all have been to the gym. They are up to 90kg lighter and look slimmer, yet are 114mm longer and 37mm wider than previous models. The big gains show in greater cabin space, especially backseat leg-room and a larger load volume.

PRICES AND DRIVETRAINS

Prices reflect the competitive nature of the luxury SUV market. The entry level 150kW TDI 3.0-litre V6 diesel is $62,990 -- or $13,000 less than the outgoing 176kW TDI, which was the only Touareg available after the V6 petrol and V10 diesel were dropped late last year.

Next is the 206kW FSI petrol V6 at $77,990, the same price as the 180kW TDI. Top of the range is now the 180kW TDI 4XMotion at $82,990. All models come with eight-speed automatic transmissions, up from six, and all-wheel-drive that, in the 4XMotion, includes low-range gearing.

For an extra $5000, the 4XMotion has serious off-road gearing, with a 2.72:1 reduction and a lockable centre diff. The wide spread of gear ratios provides a short first gear for launch and two overdrive top gears for touring, the diesel being slightly taller geared than the petrol.

The all-wheel drive versions are well set up for moderate off-road forays. They have high clearance, off-road settings and a torque-sensing centre differential to vary drive from a normal 40:60 front to rear up to 20:80 and 60:40.

ECONOMY

Fuel-saving tricks include lower drag, the multi-speed gearbox, engine stop-start, brake energy recuperation and fast warming of the driveline. Fuel efficiency improves by up to 20 per cent.

On test, the 3.0-litre 180kW diesel had a combined average of 7.4l/100km and the 3.6-litre petrol FSI a combined average of 10.1l/100km, both about 2l/100km less than their predecessors.

Both engines are smooth and quiet and perfectly matched to the silky and decisive eight-speed auto, reaching 100km/h in a sprightly 7.8-seconds, a little more than a second quicker than previously and impressive for a 2.2-tonne wagon.

DRIVING

The Touareg is easy to drive and feels more agile than its size and weight suggest. Handling is accurate and poised, with minimal body roll. The ride is mostly composed and compliant, although there is still some tyre thump over rough edges. Fit and finish are excellent, the interior has a quality feel and the controls are clearly marked and mostly easy to use.

The front seats are wide and firm, with plenty of adjustment. The rear seats are well padded, recline and have generous leg and headroom. Load space is useful and benefits from the extra length in the latest models.

EQUIPMENT

Standard equipment includes nine airbags, stability control, leather seats, alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, hill descent control, hill-hold assist, active rollover protection, multi-function display, Bluetooth, an equal-top-of-class 3500kg towing capacity, heated and folding mirrors. But there is no full-size spare wheel, not even as an option, just an inflation kit.

Missing from the Volkswagen line-up in Australia is the VW Phaeton. Phaeton is the luxury Volkswagen primarily sold in Germany, Europe  and now selling well in mainland China. As a Volkswagen dealers, we've had a number of enquiries from Volkswagen owners regarding this vehicle, but Volkswagen head office in Sydney says it's a no go.

As referred in the article below, this could all change with a new model due in 2015. Replacing the old V6 and V8 petrol driven technology with current diesel technology could be a game changer for Phaeton and hopefully that could herald the arrival of the most luxurious of Volkswagens - here's hoping

Whilst you can't drive a Phaeton now, perhaps consideration could be given to either the Passat V6 sedan or Passat CC. 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton Facelift

High demand for the Volkswagen Phaeton in China has given new optimism for its successor.

On the market for 10 years, the Phaeton largely missed sales targets year after year, prompting the model to be cancelled in the U.S. after 2006.

However, that could all change as China has delivered a 50 percent increase in Phaeton sales in the past year. This accounts for Dresden producing 11,166 units, particularly fully loaded long wheel-base models equipped with V6 and V8 gasoline engines. Despite the improvement, it is still far behind the competition.

For the second generation successor due in 2015, the Phaeton will ride on the same MLP (modular longitudinal platform) as the Audi A8 and have design characteristics taken from the Cross Coupe concept.

We can also expect smaller engines with forced induction and cylinder deactivation technology. There's also word of a hybrid and plug-in hybrid variant, but nothing is official as of yet.

If you saw this inside a Golf R or Golf GTI, you'd be forgiven for thinking that VW had gone off the deep end. This is however the steering wheel from Michael Schumacher's F1 Mercedes. Not only couldn't a normal person afford one - rumoured to be worth in excess of $50,000 but you'd run off the road even considering which button to push. And to think that these guys, like Michael, perform these function changes at speeds of around 250klm - 320klm per hour.

Mercedes AMG Petronas has unleashed Michael Schumacher to explain the workings of their F1 steering wheel, Buttons, knobs, switches and … more buttons.

McLaren has just unveiled this hi-tech wonder in their 2011 racers, and while the teams are notoriously secretive about their car, however Mercedes AMG Petronas has unleashed pet race driver Michael Schumacher to explain the workings of their F1 steering wheel.

And this is more than ‘just a steering wheel’ to the team. It’s “the driver's primary interface with his car” Mercedes AMG Petronas says.

“Apart from the obvious use of steering the car around the circuit, the wheel is a complex and highly technical piece of equipment which gives the driver the information that he needs to drive the car, and the facility to tune the car for various situations as they arise out on track.”

Abt Multivan T5 facelift 23.04.2010

Produces up to 240 PS (176 kW / 237 hp)

ABT Sportsline has revealed their new engine tuning program for the Volkswagen T5.

Starting with the 2.0-liter TSI, the engine has been tuned to produce 240 PS (176 kW / 237 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 9.4 seconds.

On the diesel side, the 84 PS (62 kW / 83 hp) 2.0-liter TDI has been upgraded to produce 110 PS (81 kW / 108 hp). Likewise, the 102 PS (75 kW / 101 hp) variant has been tweaked to develop 130 PS (96 kW / 128 hp). Lastly, the 140 PS (103 kW / 138 hp) variant has been tuned to produce 170 PS (125 kW / 168 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

The van can also be equipped with the previously announced body kit that includes a new grille, revised side skirts and a modified rear bumper.

If you HAVE to have your convertible with a hard roof, then you can stop reading this story right now.

In days of old when knights were bold, convertibles didn't have hard tops - they came just as God intended, with a soft top that let in dust, water and wind.

These days, manufacturers have come a long way - soft top or rag top convertibles don't let in the elements, in fact they are downright civilized.

Enter stage left Volkswagen Golf cabrio. Whilst it's big brother has a hard top, the VW EOS is pretty pricey and up there with the other vehicles compared in this article. Audi, BMW, and Peugeot have similar sized convertibles to the VW Golf, but are way more expensive, starting at around $51k to the Golf's $39k

And apart from engine size (VW 1.4 twin charger) the differentiating features are nil. All cars have a 5 star safety rating so apart from the hardtop and the fact that you're buying a badge, you'd be nuts to ignore the Golf.

New Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet’s attractive looks, lithe performance and very competitive pricing

Although convertibles and cabriolets with hardtop roofs have become common in recent years, there is still plenty of demand for traditional soft-top convertibles.

Purists of open-top cars have no interest in driving something that looks like a closed coupe when the roof is up, so will find the new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet most attractive.

DESIGN AND EQUIPMENT

Volkswagen’s Golf Cabriolet combines the best of the traditional soft-top, with modern folding-roof thinking. The roof is ultra fast and you can put it up and down three times in 60 seconds. The easy-to-use one-button function lets you get it up and down at the lights with time to spare.

When the top is down there is no separate cover for the folded roof, rather the upper surface of the front roof bow becomes the top of the roof stowage are. Because the folded roof sits on top of the boot rather than inside it there’s good luggage space of 250 litres.

However, the boot lid is small and low down and loading/unloading is not easy. The rear seatbacks in the Cabriolet can be folded flat to significantly expand carrying space. Previous models only had a small ski hatch. We found the Golf Cabriolet’s windscreen angle ideal, providing protection from the wind without interfering with the open air feel. Purists will rejoice.

Interior space in the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is good with plenty of leg and headroom for the front seat occupants and reasonable space for adults in the back. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, the back seats less so, but for heaven's sake this is a car designed for two and who cares about those in the back.

The interior is pleasingly quiet with the roof in place thanks to a special insulating filler layer. Bluetooth connectivity for both phone and audio, USB and Auxiliary sockets and Media Interface unit all make it easier to entertain and communicate while on the road.

SAFETY

Standard safety features include five airbags, ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, electronic stability control, hill start assist. All previous Golf convertibles have used a fixed roll bar to provide protection in the unfortunate event of a rollover.

While the Golf may have a traditional roof, the new model has a modern electronic system of looking after its occupants. Two recessed bars triggered by the car’s airbag controller spring upwards in about a quarter of a second if an impending rollover is detected. The front windscreen frame is reinforced to also act as a roll-bar.

However, the chances of rollovers are minimal thanks to the installation of various electronic systems able to sense when a car is starting to slide sideways and do everything possible to bring the errant Golf back on course.

DRIVING

Despite the absence of a fixed roof, clever body design means the car is rigid and we found almost no evidence of the scuttle-shake that used to affect convertibles. Purists may have liked that aspect of convertibles, but we must admit that a solid ride suits us better. And the lack of body movement gives the suspension a nice platform to work from.

There’s good feedback through the steering wheel and handling is sharp and positive. It’s no sports machine but it comes close and it’s most enjoyable to drive. Our road test Golf Cabriolet had Volkswagen’s clever 1.4-litre TSI twin charger engine mated to a seven-speed double-clutch DSG transmission.

Double-clutch transmission can be notoriously temperamental at very low speeds and this one proved no exception. Having said that, we did a fair bit of heavy-duty commuting with our review car and the automatic changes were much appreciated. The model designation of Golf 118TSI refers to the engine’s peak power of 118 kW, at 5800 rpm, while the maximum torque of 240 Nm runs through an excellent spread that goes all the way from 1500 to 4000 revs.

Fuel consumption is typically in the seven to nine litres per hundred kilometres range around town, dropping into the low sixes on a trip. This is pretty good for a petrol engine with the sort of performance provided.

VERDICT

New Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet’s attractive looks, lithe performance and very competitive pricing could well see a swing away from folding hardtop convertibles back towards the soft-top era.

Nah Nah - we've got it already and you can go suffer. Amazing but true that Volkswagen Australia have one-upped VW America in having Scirocco in this country before the USA.

My thoughts are that the USA need to earn it's stripes before they get the top line models - we'll get the Passat Alltrak this year as well, when it doesn't seem that the Yanks will soon if at all. The reality is that Australia is batting well above its weight in market share of 27% over 2010.

Whilst our market is small compared to the US's 14 million annual sales, VW Germany sees the share of market as just important and are rewarding those RH drive countries well.

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Company is also considering a production version of the Alltrack concept

In a recent interview, Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning said he wants to bring the Scirocco to the United States.

Speaking with Automotive News, Browning commented "That's a piece of the lineup that I would dearly love to see here." However, the model is unlikely to be offered in America until the next-generation is launched.

Besides talking about the Scirocco, Browning hinted the company might offer a production version of the Alltrack concept. It would likely be targeted at theSubaru Outback, but come equipped with a diesel engine.

The Carsguide team who wrote this story need to have a harder look at the benchmark operator in the taxi industry and not lump everyone into the same frying pan.

For the last two years I've had personal dealings with arguably the best taxi manager in Queensland if not the country - Greg Collins from Complete Taxi Management.  Greg's company based in Virginia, North Brisbane runs an exemplary business. Taxi Operator of the Year, an Earth Check approved business, Greg has now over 50 Passat Diesel Wagons on his fleet, with the balance of almost 20 due to change in the next 18 months.

Greg researched the viability of many vehicles when Ford Australia decided to drop the LPG Falcon taxi wagon from its range some years ago. Toyota Camry and Prius were considered along with Ford Territory and Holden Commodore,  but after extensive investigation and a working trip to Germany, Volkswagen Passat 125TDI DSG wagons were chosen as the vehicle to take Complete Taxi forward.

"Not only does the VW provide outstanding fuel economy for my fleet", said Greg, "but they're environmentally friendly, highly recyclable, and arguably one of the safest cars on the road, taxi or no taxi".  "Our drivers are trained in the use and purpose of their vehicles, and the comments back from our customers is that they prefer to ride in our Volkswagens".

So rather than criticizing the industry, may I suggest that Carsguide and other media outlets investigate best practice of the companies such as Complete Taxi.

Most Australians see no improvement in taxi services.

More than one in two Australians believe that taxi services are deteriorating, according to the Sydney University. The University has just released the findings of its latest quarterly national transport survey.

Only 14 percent of Australians saw an improvement in taxi services in their local areas over the last 12 months, with 79 percent of regular taxi users reporting that they were worse or unchanged.

"We need to rethink regulation of the whole taxi sector, as there are clearly a lot of people who are unhappy with the level of taxi services in their state," says Professor David Hensher, Director of the University of Sydney's Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS), who produce the ITLS- Transport Opinion Survey (TOPS).

"One of the major issues in the sector is that the person who owns the registration plates isn't necessarily the person who drives the vehicles".

"This means there are a lot of drivers who have just arrived in Australia desperate for a job who don't speak English or know their way around particularly well. Some of this feedback is anecdotal, but we're hearing enough of it to suggest it's fact."

Victorians, South Australians and Queenslanders experienced lower confidence in taxi services, with only 14 percent, 13 percent and 11 percent of residents reporting that services had improved over the last 12 months.

"With the current taxi inquiry in Melbourne, the survey has really reinforced to us just how negative the public perception of this industry is," says Professor Hensher, who with the University's Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies has been working with the Victorian government on ways to improve the service as part of the inquiry.

"The reliability of the service, the attitude of drivers and the poor maintenance of vehicles are major concerns in the taxi industry across Australia." Confidence in public transport in consumers' local areas reached its lowest point in the nine quarterly surveys since the TOPS project commenced, with a short-term transport confidence index of 86, compared with the previous result of 98 from the fourth quarter of 2011.

"There are a number of reasons for this, including the recent state government changes in NSW and Victoria. These have produced higher expectations for change in transport. While there have been some changes, they are not as great as consumers had hoped," says Professor Hensher.

The survey also reinforced feedback from last quarter that suggests consumers would prefer funding to concentrate on improving transport within cities rather than between them.

It's said that good things come in small packages, but that hasn't necessarily been the case for Volkswagen.  In reality, there are no luxury cars in the smaller VW's - something that seems to have caught the attention of the senior people at Volkswagen in Wolfsburg, Germany. Reports coming from VW indicate that there's a move to add luxury versions to Golf and Jetta to resemble the luxury versions of Passat and CC

Whilst customers can specify luxury inclusions, there's nothing like a unique badge to distinguish the lesser from the more. A Jetta or Golf TSI or TDI is just that - different engines in the same car. Perhaps the company would consider bringing back a name such as Karmann Ghia to distinguish the luxury versions.

After all, Scirocco is in reality just a Golf coupe. But the name does it more justice than a Golf Coupe. Food for thought VW

2012 Volkswagen CC facelift

Mercedes is not the only one looking into adding a smaller four-door coupe variant to their range. A report that has surfaced from British magazine Autocar has revealed Volkswagen is also considering a smaller model that will be positioned below the CC. In fact, the report states that it has already been given the green light from the powers above.

The Volkswagen source that revealed the information was not identified in the report, however he/she did comment on the subject. "Our research suggests there is increasingly a market for a sportier and more stylish version of the Jetta in the mould of the CC only smaller and more affordable. From the feedback we've received so far buyers want an individual bodystyle and the practicality of four doors."

It currently carries the internal name of SC (Sport Coupe) and it will become the third variant in the Jetta range and will ride on the same MQB (Modularen Querbau) platform that underpins the new Audi A3.

If all goes according to plan, we should see the new Volkswagen SC on the market in 2014 as a 2015 model.

Someone in Volkswagen's Wolfsburg design centre is going to get a pineapple.

They probably thought that cold weather testing in the middle of nowhere was disguise enough - imagine the thoughts and feelings of not only those same engineers, but also the hierarchy within Volkswagen Germany when they see these pictures.

Above all that - what a car! Can't wait till 2013, I'd like it for our dealership, Northstar Volkswagen right now. Can you imagine the market impact of a car that delivers 111 litres/100k whilst only emitting 24 grams of CO2?

Volkswagen XL1 prototype spy photo

The long-awaited 1-liter car has finally been confirmed for production and here are the first shots of a prototype testing to prove it. Surprisingly it is not wearing any camouflage to hide any of its styling elements, so immediately we get to see the production model in its full glory.

Development of the model started out in concept form when it was unveiled as the L1 back in 2009, then last year the Formula XL1 concept was unveiled. It is believed the latter concept will provide the name for the production model as sources say it will become the Volkswagen XL1. The small engine within the XL1 is expected to produce some quite astonishing fuel economy and emissions figures. The concept was reported to emit just 24g/km of CO2 gases and can go 100 km on just 0.9-liters of fuel.

The VW XL1 is expected to hit the market in 2013 for a limited production run.

Volkswagen Golf VI GTI by CFC StylingStation 15.03.2012

It's an inevitable trend as we see more graphics companies specializing in custom car exterior vinyl foils turning into all out tuning shops. Undoubtedly, in interacting with their customers, the proprietors of these firms are recognizing the need to be a one-stop-shop for all of their customer's needs but without charging the heavily stuffed footballer prices.

German company CFC StylingStation is one of those small businesses who specializes in custom car exterior vinyl foils but has branched out. Now the firm from the city of Neuss on the left bank of the Rhine river wants to showcase (once again) its tuning chops with the Volkswagen Golf VI GTI.

To start, CFC has added to the body a Kerscher front bumper carbon-lip spoiler and 2.5cm widened fenders (together cost 800 euro), side sills, rear diffuser, mirror caps and engine cover all in carbon-fiber by Black-Gold-Design (set costs 1,200 euro).

The chassis is distinguished by two different wheel designs: pink ASA GT1 8.5x19 inch wheels on the one side and red ASA GT3 wheels in the same size on the other. Tires are Hankook EvoS1 225/35R19 (each wheel set costs 2,400 euro). The front wheel hubs receive Eibach spacers while the rear gets 5mm H&R wheel disks. APX AP coilovers (779 euro) in combination with H&R stabilizers ensure increased driving dynamics. The TÜV certified braking system (949 euro) includes 4-piston calipers, carbon-steel two-piece grooved brake discs and also an ultra light floating aluminum hub.

Under the hood CFC taps MR Car Design's turbo upgrade kit (2,200 euro) which includes downpipe and black tail pipe. Power is increased from 210 PS (155 kW / 207 hp) to a Golf R worthy 270 PS (199kW / 266 hp) and 400 Nm of torque.

And of course let's not forget CFC's specialty which gives the GTI a matt gray foiling (1,400 euro) while the roof is painted in High Gloss Carbon Black (550 euro). As a unique touch of contrast, the right side fender and front bumper grille is given a cartoonish collage design which CFC calls Sticker Bombing (250 euro).

Other upgrades include anthracitic colored tinted glass (248 euro), pink tinted fog-lights (50 euro) and a MK SoundStyle audio system which includes a Pioneer head unit, amplifiers by Mosconi, cabling by AIV, Rainbow speakers and Jehnert Doorboards.

When all is said and done, upgrades cost 12,900 euro not including the HiFi system which costs an additional 10,000 euro.

Peter Barnwell of News Limited Community Newspapers provides insightful comment on the new VW Up auto.  And Peter's first impression is that you should stick to the delightful 6 speed manual rather than the automatic.

Whilst some of his critique may be harsh, having driven a Smartfor recently, I'd agree that technology doesn't transfer into small clutchless manuals. If you're thinking it will be like Volkswagens impressive DSG gearbox, then think again. Simply the engineers at VW couldn't fit the dsg box into the Up. If you have to, then you'll have to put up with the quirkiness of the gearbox, but if not, then the manual version, will be your pick.

Peter Barnwell road tests and reviews the five-speed auto 2012 VW Up in Germany.

We have been waiting for a while to drive this little car, which Volkswagen is adding to the city light-car field.

TECHNOLOGY

They trotted out a cute little red Up five-door with the 'big' 55kW, 1.0-litre three cylinder petrol engine. This was also the first drive by anyone outside Volkswagen of the new five-speed automated manual model - the "auto" for want of a better description.

Up is a while away scheduled for a local launch late this year probably in three and five door variants with two versions of the 1.0-litre three pot, the 55kW and the 44kW. Up has been built to cater for a growing call for smaller city cars that offer many attributes from larger cars.

THE RANGE

VW Up is built on a new platform that will be leveraged for quite a few other models in the near future. In Europe, Up is available in a number of grades starting with the Take Up then moving through Move Up, High Up, Black Up and White Up in ascending equipment order.

The car gets a Euro five star crash rating (equivalent to four here) and as such has four air bags and stability control as well as high strength steel chassis components.

The five-door model we drove seats four in relative comfort with adequate rear seat leg and headroom. The boot is a useable size, deep but not very wide. We couldn't find a spare in there.

EQUIPMENT

It scores plenty of features including aircon, Bluetooth connectivity and on the Bluemotion model, auto stop/start, regenerative electricity harvesting and low rolling resistance tyres. Fuel economy is in the low 4.0-litres/100km bracket for both engines and both five speed transmissions.

Up passes Euro 5 emissions regs and can be optioned with a portable Maps and More sat nav system that is networked into the cars electronics. This was fitted to the drive car and proved a godsend in the back blocks surrounding Wolfsburg. It even tells you when you are exceeding the speed limit.

DRIVING

Our drive car also had the large blue tinted glass sliding sunroof, daytime running lights, 16-inch alloys and City Emergency Braking that operates up to speeds of 30kmh. The auto is likely to be a low cost option but after our drive, we wouldn't recommend it because it causes the car to lurch with each gear change and rushes to a higher gear to cut fuel use at the expense of driveability.

We'd go for the manual every time. The little warbling 1.0-litre donk has good pick-up and hums along like a beauty on the highway at the speed limit. There's a bit in reserve if you need it and fuel economy at these speeds is phenomenal down into the 3.0s.

Ride is surprisingly good for such a small and short car and it has a small turning circle. We rate it a fun car to drive in a range of driving environments.

INSIDE

The interior looks good but doesn't have many soft surfaces except for the seats with perforated upholstery in the test car. It has a decent audio system and plenty of storage options.

We like the painted interior surfaces and the contrast interior colours. It has a cheeky face and pert tail and is a whole lot more functional and better to look at than the Smart for Two for example bigger and less expensive too.

What we want to know is how VW in Australia is going to fit this car in around the Polo, Skoda Fabia and same under the skin Skoda Citigo?

Volkswagen's new small car, the Up promises to shake up the small car market when it arrives in Australia in the last quarter of 2012.

Built at the companies plant in Slovakia, Up is being manufactured in 3 door and 5 door with a 6 speed manual transmission as standard and a semi auto available as an option. Reports from around the world suggest that the auto is not as it should be, but knowing VW as well as we do now, there'll be a surpise in store. Northstar Volkswagen expects the Up to start under $15000 and will very much depend on the currency exchange rates.
